Why your Cretan Pot is so unique.

  • The pot is ‘hand-thrown’. Not to be confused with Hand Made which can mean that clay is imply put into moulds, an unskilled process resulting in all pots being the same.
  • Cretan pots are completely ‘hand-thrown’ on a potter’s wheel, yes even the one’s over 1m tall!!
  • Each craftsman transfers his own particular character and knowledge. You can be assured there will be no two pots exactly the same, each one is unique.
  • The clay used is found only in Crete. It is very high in mineral content, this is not only important to the colours of the pot but also to its strength and durability.
  • The fuel used in the firing process is called ‘Pirina’ the by-product of the olive pressing process that takes place each winter; it is mostly dried olive pips. The pirina when burnt creates an intense heat in the kiln reaching temperatures above 1000°C. Only this type of fuel, combined with the special clay can produce the unique colours of this Cretan pot, a pot that is completely frost proof.
  • Sometimes cracks may be present around the circumference of the pot or on the base – this is completely normal and is part of the firing process. The pot is still fully covered by our warranty.

Cretan Pot Care

Over the years this beautiful Cretan pot will slowly release mineral salts, enhancing its character while creating an ‘aged’ appearance. If you prefer to keep the pot more like its original colour we suggest scrubbing with water using a stiff brush.

Winter Maintenance for Terracotta Pots

Your terracotta pot is guaranteed frost proof. To ensure there is no frost damage caused, please make sure that the pot is stood on the ‘feet’ supplied to ensure that there is sufficient air flow under the pot.
